That Time With Sugar by Tess Oliver

This book has been on my wishlist since before its release, so when I was offered a copy in exchange for a review, I jumped right at it. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed several other books by this author and I thought that That Time With Sugar would follow along the same lines. Well, let's just say this wasn't quite like anything I've read before - and I really enjoyed it! The story is basically told in reverse where we first meet the interesting trio of misfits - Tommy, Sugar (yes, it's her name) and Jules - at an upscale rehab clinic. All have their own addictions and illnesses that they're dealing with and either trying to overcome or just live with.
The story is told by Tommy, however all three of the main characters were absolutely captivating from the get-go. Tommy is definitely a complicated man with deep anger issues but you could feel his love for Sugar and really, you just can't help but love him. I wasn't a fan of Sugar to begin with because of her beyond-flirty nature, but thanks to the way the book is written and that its told by Tommy who is insanely in love with her, you end up loving her too. As Tommy says '...she finds good in everything.' And Jules with his idiosyncrasies, and how he handled the blows thrown at him, was probably the most fascinating to me and I definitely preferred him off his meds than on!
While this is far from a light and fluffy read, I did find myself smiling at times and other times swallowing back tears. There was also plenty of intrigue to keep me guessing and I loved how everything unfolded. The book was beautifully written, but I really wish there had been more of the present day. But maybe I'm just greedy, I don't know. Great read and I can definitely recommend it with 4.5*
