The Rush by Rachel Higginson

REVIEWED BY Micky Barnard

The Rush (The Siren, #1)The Rush by Rachel Higginson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

To all intents and purposes this book reads like a straight YA initially. Very good YA but you can feel the twist in the background; it's subtle. Ivy returns to high school at 16 after a stint in 'rehab'. Something awful happened that left her previous boyfriend Sam irreparably damaged, never to return to school. Ivy is reviled by many but she's taken under the wing of some members of the football team. Ivy is drawn to Ryder but he has a girlfriend and seems immune to Ivy's charms. This is the nub of confusion for Ivy. No male is supposed to be able to resist her charms. Ivy is different and she hates her life.

This was far from run of the mill YA. It has a subtle paranormal thread running through it. It is well written and the characters are believable in their flawed reality. This is the first of three books so I'm looking forward to the continuation of these characters.

This book was provided by the publisher in return for an honest review.
