I devoured Happily Ever Ninja; I kind of expect to with any Penny Reid book. However, this was something of a different read from Ms Reid. It was serious. It was emotional. It was angsty. It was wonderful. It was unexpected.
"Marriage with children is a study in delayed everything - delayed conversation, delayed resolutions, and delayed gratification. And I wasn't certain I could deal with the delays any longer."
Fiona and Greg have it going on, this we know from Ninja at First Sight. This book fast forwards 14 years later to married life, kids and a husband that is away for work much more than he is at home. The undertone to this story is whether love can be so deep that it lasts at that intensity for the long haul. The story line was sedate married and family life, then it was the wildest ride imaginable, still credible but it had me on the edge of my seat. This period in Greg and Fiona's marriage tested them as individuals and as a couple beyond their limits. I had brimming eyes at various junctures and was wrapped in knots wondering where it would end and what the fall out would be.
"Are you really happy? With us? With kids and a wife? Or are you looking for a way out?"
"That's like asking me, Are you happy with your heart beats?"
Greg's love had a wonderous ferocity. Fiona's love wasn't as immediately tangible but she needed to find herself, her identity, her role in family and marriage. This book resonated with me significantly, love and marriage over time; such a great subject, credible, passionate and full of hope.
I've been on a glut of Penny Reid books and I feel like I'm endlessly extolling the wonders of her talents but I find that I have more to say. This book showed me something different in her writing, an ability to try something new, move out of a comfort zone and not just succeed but excel at it. This book fit into the series well, the knitting crew were there as ever and I would personally like for this knitting group to expand so that the series can go on and on.
