Picture Perfect Lie by Marquita Valentine
Campbell and Knight meet at an airport lounge while waiting for their respective flights. Campbell is traveling with her infant daughter and when Knight sees her struggling to keep her cool, he swoops in and saves the day. Upon learning her story and before getting his own flight, Knight gives Campbell the details of his family and instructs her to go to them in the event that she needs help.
Their relationship is built on a lie, but not to each other. They lie to everyone else and say they’re married and that Hazel is really Knight’s daughter. To be honest, seeing the way Knight is with Hazel, it really wasn’t that difficult for anyone to believe. Knight and Campbell maintain and build on a relationship through Skype and email while he’s off on duty and it was really sweet the way their relationship developed. I enjoyed Knight’s eagerness to spend time with Campbell and his joy in Hazel.
I did feel that some parts were a bit rushed and that we missed an entire chunk of detail where we don’t know why Campbell’s family is the way it is. I thought they were an important factor and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t explained. Overall I did enjoy the book and quite look forward to the next in the series.
